FREED, Brigitte L. - A widely recognized San Francisco retailer for Sue Fisher King of Sacramento St., died at home early on July 24th of sudden heart failure. She was 65. A native of East Germany and of French Huguenot origin, she and her family fled the advancing Russian Army to Hamburg near the end of WW II. After completing her scholastic studies in Blankenese, she worked in Madrid, Zurich and Germany, took a trip around the world and set sail at age 22 on a banana boat with a girlfriend for the US and the Bay Area. Brigitte worked for 16 years as a travel consultant doing customized international travel planning before moving into retailing in the City. She met her husband on an SF apartment rooftop in the early 60's, leading to their marriage in 1965. The family resided on Russian Hill for 35 years before moving recently to the Park Presidio Area. She was actively involved in volunteer causes both in San Francisco and Inverness. For many years she was an honored volunteer for the Commonwealth Club and was slated to be honored again when her death intervened. Brigitte was a trails work volunteer over the years for the Pt. Reyes National Seashore, a staunch supporter of the Marin Agricultural Land Trust as well as the Marin Conservation League, and a long time member of the Inverness Assn. Brigitte Freed is survived by her husband Harvey and daughter Ariela, her son Eliot and granddaughter Klara of Mariefred, Sweden, her brother Klaus Lefevre of Rio de Janeiro, and her mother Kathe Lefevre of Germany. Her ashes will be spread in the garden of the family's Inverness home. Contributions in her memory to the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT) at P. O Box 809, Pt Reyes Station, CA 94956, c/o Robert Berner, would make Brigitte smile.
