Lawyer Leroy Lounibos

A Mass of Christian Burial for Leroy J. Lounibos, prominent Petaluma trial attorney, will be offered Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Petaluma.

Lounibos, a lifelong Petaluma resident, died Saturday at a local hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 71.

Lounibos had specialized in trial law throughout Northern California. He had been a partner in Lounibos & Lounibos, one of Petaluma’s oldest law firms. He had worked with his brother, John B. Lounibos and his son, Leroy J. Lounibos Jr., in the law firm.

He was a graduate of St. Vincent’s High School in Petaluma, University of Santa Clara and University of San Francisco.

In the 1950s, Lounibos had served as president of the Board of Freeholders of Petaluma and was author of the city’s charter. He also had served on various Sonoma County, state and federal commission.

He long had been active at St. Vincent de Paul Church. He was appointed to a papal knighthood by the late Pope John XXIII. He was also a member of the Knights of St. Gregory and the Young Men’s Institute at the church.

He was a member of the American and California Bar Associations and was a past president of the Sonoma County Bar Association. Lounibos was also a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and Association of Defense Counsels of Northern California.

Lounibos was also a member of the Petaluma Elks Lodge and American Legion Post. During World War II he had served in the Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Helen B. Lounibos of Petaluma; five sons, Leroy J. Lounibos Jr., Richard Lounibos and Thomas Lounibos, all of Petaluma, Donald Lounibos of Tahoe City and Robert J. Lounibos of Berkeley; four daughters, Lucille Lane of Petaluma, Jean Chambers of Sebastopol, Barbara Woldemar of Richmond and Helen Abruzzini of Saratoga; a brother, John J. Lounibos of Petaluma; two sisters, Mabel Spridgen of Santa Rosa and Alice Martinelli of Petaluma; and 19 grandchildren.

Recitation of the rosary will be at 8 p.m. today at the Parent Funeral Chapel, Petaluma. Entombment will be at Calvary Cemetery.

The family prefers contributions to the St. Vincent’s Schools Fund, 35 Liberty Street, Petaluma, 94952.
