EMMA KOEPKE

Emma C. Koepke, 83, of San Rafael, onetime worker for women’s suffrage and volunteer service worker, died Sunday at a local hospital.

Mrs. Koepke was nominated last spring for the Outstanding Senior Citizen of Marin award by the Marin Senior Association.

She was the widow of Albert C. Koepke, who died in 1945.

Mrs. Koepke was a native of Stryker, Ohio, who moved to Chicago, Ill., at the age of 10. She worked for the telephone company as a special operator and married Koepke in 1917.

After the birth of her daughter, Marion, she left her job and became active as a member of the League of Women Voters in Chicago.

She lobbied for women’s suffrage in Illinois and served on the first election board which allowed women members. She also was active in Girl Scout work in Illinois.

During World War II she worked in a steel mill office and was a Red Cross volunteer and blood donor.

After the war she worked as a housemother in children’s homes, and moved to California in 1950 and Mill Valley in 1951.

Mrs. Koepke worked at children’s homes in San Francisco and Oakland until she took over operation of the snack bar in the G and G Market in Mill Valley.

She retired in 1958 and became a volunteer driver for the Red Cross and a volunteer recreational worker for the Marin Senior coordinating Council, assisting in recreation programs at convalescent hospitals in Marin.

Mrs. Koepke also was a member of the Goldenaires and Marin County Seniors and American Red Cross. She lived in Mill Valley until moving to San Rafael three years ago.

Surviving are her daughter, Marion A. Harding of Mill Valley; a brother, Ralph J. Schauer, and a sister, Clara E. Schauer, both of Lansing, Ill., and a grandson.
