Joseph B. Goff, retired Dixie schools executive
A memorial service for Joseph B. Goff, assistant superintendent of Dixie School District for 24 years, will be held at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Christ Presbyterian Church, Terra Linda.
Goff died of cancer Sunday night in a local hospital. He was 57.
The long-time educator resigned in January from the Dixie post.
Born in Michigan, he came to California at the age of 7 with his parents. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II, remained in the Marine Corps Reserve, and formerly was commanding officer of the reserve training unit in Marin, with the rank of major.
He was a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles and taught in Imperial and Inyo counties. In 1952 he was appointed superintendent of child welfare and attendance for the Marin County schools office. Shortly afterwards, he took the Dixie post.
He was active with Christ Presbyterian Church, was past president of the Lions Club of San Rafael, and was active in many other civic groups.
He is survived by his wife, Caroline Paine Goff of the home, 791 Las Colindas Road, San Rafael; two sons, Thomas Alvin Goff of San Francisco and Frederick William Goff of Los Angeles; two daughters, Katherine Goff Dilkes of Los Angeles and Margaret Wallace of Mill Valley; two brothers, Thomas Goff of Chula Vista and James Goff of El Cajon; his father, Z. Alvin Goff of Madera County; his mother, Vesta H. Goff of San Diego, and two grandchildren.
His body will be cremated.
The family prefers memorial contributions to the Joseph B. Goff Scholarship Fund, through the Terra Linda High School Scholarship Foundation, or to any preferred charity.
