Nancy Gray Harris -- dedicated volunteer
by Chuck Squatriglia, Chronicle Staff Writer

Nancy Gray Harris, a fourth-generation San Franciscan who served 27 years on the board of directors of Children's Hospital, now part of California Pacific Medical Center, died Aug. 25 at home in San Francisco. She was 87.

Mrs. Harris attended Grant Elementary School and Miss Hamlin's High School in San Francisco. After graduating from Stanford University in 1937 with a degree in history, Mrs. Harris continued her education by traveling throughout Europe and studying at Alliance Francaise in Paris for a year.

During World War II, Mrs. Harris served as a Red Cross nurse in San Francisco and married Robert C. Harris of San Francisco in 1941.

After the war, she taught at the Golden Gate Kindergarten and joined the Children's Hospital Auxiliary, later becoming a member of its board. As a member of the hospital's building committee, Mrs. Harris was responsible for much of the interior design of the hospital's Doctor's Building at 2828 California St.

Mrs. Harris was a founding member of the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum Society and a lifetime member of the Junior League. She also was a volunteer with other civic and cultural organizations.

In her spare time, Mrs. Harris enjoyed playing the piano and was a talented singer. She was for a time a member of the San Francisco Choral Society and an avid patron and supporter of the San Francisco Opera. She was among the original members of the San Francisco Opera Guild.

Mrs. Harris is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert C. Harris of San Francisco; three children, Lucie H. Alexander of Tiburon, Robert C. Harris Jr. of New York and William Gray Harris of Los Angeles; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a cousin, Carol Gray Costigan of San Francisco.

At Mrs. Harris' request, no services are planned. Memorials may be made to the San Francisco Opera Association or a favorite charity.
