Hartwell, 50, dies of cancer
By Chez Shadman
Richard Hartwell Johnson, son of Burt and Carolyn Johnson of Point Reyes Station, died in his home on Saturday, Jan. 18 of spinal cancer. He was 50. Mr. Hartwell’s battle with the cancer was courageous, his parents told The Light this week.
Mr. Hartwell attended UC Santa Cruz and, as a junior, transferred to UC Berkeley, graduating in 1974.
He was employed as an engineer in county offices in Napa and Santa Rosa. He worked for MKM Engineering Company in Santa Rosa and later started the Hartwell Company. The firm, with offices in Graton and Sebastopol, provided structural engineering for architects in the Bay Area.
Mr. Hartwell was known for his love of hiking in mountain areas and his scenic photography, his parents noted.
He married Amber Khan-Engel in 1988. The couple’s son, Cyrus, was born in 1989. After a divorce in 1995, he later married Terriann Tomlin. Mr. Hartwell is survived by his parents, Burt and Carolyn Johnson; son Cyrus Hartwell; and step-children Sidra Khan-Engel and Kayemarie Tomlin.
A memorial service will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. The location is to be announced. Those wanting more information can call 663-1772.
