Mrs. Iva E. Stephens Dies At 72

Rebekkah Lodge memorial service for Mrs. Iva E. Stephens, 72, of 845 Plum Street, Novato, former caterer and school dietitian who died Saturday in San Jose of a heart attack, will be held at 8 p.m. today in the Redwood Chapel Funeral Home in Novato.

Mrs. Stephens was visiting her daughter, Mrs. Ruth McCann, when stricken. She died a few hours later in a San Jose hospital.

A native of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, she had lived in Novato for 28 years. Her husband, Harrison Stephens, a carpenter, died in 1942.

Mrs. Stephens was known throughout the Novato area for her cooking. For many years, she catered at various club functions in Novato. She was a dietitian for the San Jose elementary school district from 1954 to 1958.

She was a member of the Novato Presbyterian Church and the Open Door Club of that church, a grand noble of Tamal Rebekkah Lodge 393 of San Rafael, and a member of the Senior Citizens of Novato and t he Auxiliary to Donald V. Westlund Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Novato.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Bob Jack and Mrs. Nettie Marie Droubay of Novato, and Mrs. McCann of San Jose; a son, James Stephens of San Jose; a brother, Ernest Carmen of Springfield, Mass.; eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Redwood Funeral Home in Novato. The body will be sent to Oakland, Iowa for burial. Memorial contributions to the Heart Fund would be appreciated by the family.
