Josef Hoog

Josef Hoog died in his Novato home Sunday following a long illness. He was 55.

A native of New York, he settled in Novato in 1966 when he took a job as the chief of physical therapy at U.S. Public Health Service in San Francisco.

He retired from the service in 1970 and later held physical therapy posts with Ross General Hospital and then Marin General Hospital before opening a private practice in Terra Linda.

During his 16 years with the public health service, he was stationed in Detroit, Mich., New Orleans, La., and Baltimore, Md.

He also served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean conflict.

He was a member of the Northern California Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Hoog in Novato; four sons, Josef T. Hoog, Thomas Hoog, and Michael Hoog, all of Novato, and Stephen Hoog of Tempe, Ariz.; a daughter, Susan Hoog of Novato; two sisters, Ann Burmeister and Marie Roser, both of New Jersey; and one grandchild.

A funeral will be held for him at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Hamilton Field chapel at Hamilton Air Force Base. It will follow recitation of the rosary at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Keaton’s Chapel of Marin in Novato. Burial will be private.

Visitation hours are set for Tuesday from noon to 9 p.m.

The family prefers that memorial contributions be made to Linus Pauling Institute in Menlo Park, Hospice of Marin or to the American Cancer Society.
