Alys Huffman Dies at 74
Alys French Huffman, 74, book lover and nursery operator, died yesterday after collapsing at her home at 808 Tamalpais Avenue, Novato.
Mrs. Huffman, wife of Roy R. Huffman, former superintendent of the Mill Valley School District and nursery partner, apparently died of natural causes, according to the Marin County Coroner's office.
Mrs. Huffman, former president of the Novato Book club and member of the Friends of the Novato Library, was to have participated today in dedication ceremonies at the new Novato Branch of the Marin County library.
She and her husband had operated the Huffman nursery in Novato since 1956. Before moving to Novato, they had lived in Mill Valley for 16 years.
A native of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Huffman was a graduate of Reed College there. She was a teacher at the Tamalpais Military Academy, San Rafael, in 1918 and 1919.
Mrs. Huffman was a member of the Novato Garden Club, the Needlework Guild, Novamarin Grandmothers, and Novato Chapter 609, Order of the Eastern Star.
While in Mill Valley, she served as publicity chairman and historian for the 14th District Parent-Teacher Association, 1946-56, as president of the Mill Valley Parent-Teacher Association, 1940-41, and a member of the Outdoor Art Club,1933-35, and Mill Valley League of Women Voters.
She was one of the founders of the Campfire Girls and Bluebird organizations in Marin County and was a life member of the California Parent-Teachers Association. In the 1920s, when she and her husband taught in Contra Costa County, she was president of both the Antioch and Pittsburg women's clubs.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Herbert J. Huffman of Canoga Park, Los Angeles County; a daughter, Nancy O'Day of Novato; two brothers, E. B. French of St. Helena and J. B. French of Livermore; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Novato Chapter 609, Order of Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Monday in the Redwood Chapel, Novato, to be followed by private inurnment.
The family prefers memorial contributions in Mrs. Huffman's name to the Novato Branch of the Marin County Library.
