John Rossi, Veteran N.W.P. Employee, Drowned In Fall From Trestle At Greenbrae

John Rossi, 62, veteran employee of the Northwestern Pacific as an electrician for many years, lost his life yesterday afternoon when he slipped and fell into Corte Madera creek while working on the trestle at Greenbrae. Fellow workmen summoned help as soon as they missed Rossi but it was 45 minutes before the body was dragged from the water, by which time life was extinct.

Rossi was working with Lewis F. Driscoll of Sausalito and C. F. Campbell of Fairfax when he fell into the water from a stringer below the deck of the trestle. Companions said he never rose to the surface. Sheriff Walter Sellmer and Undersheriff Lester McGinnis rushed to the scene of the tragedy and immediately started dragging for the body, which was finally snagged only a few feet from where Rossi fell in the water.

Meanwhile police from Ross and San Rafael responded to the call for help together with highway patrolmen. Assistant Chief Fred Scheuer of the San Rafael Fire Department rushed a pulmotor to Greenbrae and with Dr. Carl Clark worked heroically for more that an hour to restore a spark of life until it was evident that the effort was futile. Rossi's watch stopped at 2:35 indicating that was the moment of his fall into the water.

Rossi had resided in San Rafael for the past 44 years, the family home being at 508 C street. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Rossi, two sons Joseph and Charles Rossi, two sisters, Mrs. Natale Regalia and Mrs. Angelina Frederickson and two brothers, Peter and Robert Rossi.

Funeral is to be held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock from Keaton's, a requiem high mass being celebrated in St. Raphael's church commencing at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
