Joan Y. Lovejoy
Born Joan Yuen Ling Woo in Canton, China in 1948, at age five she fled the Communist with her family to Hong Kong, where she resided through high school. She then emigrated to the United States where she worked her way through college, graduating cum laude from San Francisco State with a degree in mathematics. Upon graduation, she began working for insurance companies in the San Francisco financial district, first in rating, then underwriting, and finally in data processing in positions of increasing responsibility. When she left her most recent employer, Kemper Insurance, for disability due to cancer, she was business analyst for the company's western region. She was married for nearly 26 years and lived in Novato that entire time. She is survived by her husband, Douglas, sons James and Michael, all of Novato, her mother Marya Woo of San Francisco, sisters Rosemary Ko of San Francisco and Anna Tam of Novato, and brothers Joseph Woo of Fremont, John Woo of Cupertino, and Michael Woo of San Jose. Joan was a giving, caring, considerate person and had many friends in the Bay Area insurance community, Hong Kong, the United States and Canada. She always put others first, and was happy to help anyone she met. In her memory, donations may be made to Novato Community Hospital or a favorite charity.
