Dr. Avon R. Elder, Petaluma Physician

Dr. Avon R. Elder, a longtime Petaluma general practitioner, died in a local hospital yesterday after a short illness. He was 88.

Elder was born in Tulare County and studied medicine in Los Angeles, practicing for several years in the San Joaquin Valley before moving to Southern Sonoma in 1921. The family home is at 501 Baker Street.

Since his retirement in 1960, he was active in several local lodges.

Elder was aerie physician for the Petaluma lodge of the fraternal Order of Eagles for more than 40 years, and on two occasions was named exalted ruler of the Petaluma Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He also was a trustee of the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Cly of Petaluma; a daughter, Ellen Pierce of Saratoga; two stepsons, Charles W. Chandler of Cotati and Merton L. Rorison of Houston, Tex.; a sister, Alba Wolff of Santa Cruz; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Parent Funeral Chapel in Petaluma, with private inurnment at Cypress Hill Memorial Park.

The family prefers memorial gifts to the American Cancer Society or favorite charities.
