SMITH, Richard Cherrington - 85, passed on April 15, 2002 in Santa Barbara, CA. He was widely known in the San Francisco Bay Area for leading the Direct Marketing Industry during the 50's through 70's with The Smith Company, for owning and running El Camino Printing and Publishing in Menlo Park, and for sharing Circle C Ranch in Santa Rosa with many friends and campers who knew him as Uncle Richie for over 12 years. He is most fondly remembered by his six children, Cherry Hughes of Phoenix, Richard Jr. of Laguna Niguel, Christina of Santa Barbara, David of Belmont, Betsy Gaudette-Cross of Visalia, and Amanda Grant of Soquel; his twenty two grandchildren and ten great-grand children; and brothers Phillip and Paul Smith, primarily all in California. Richard was born in Columbus, OH on July 8, 1916 to nationally known editorial cartoonist, Dorman H. Smith and Carrie W. Smith, a Christian Science Practitioner in San Rafael, California for more than fifty years. He graduated from Ross Elementary and Tamalpias High School in Mill Valley, where he swam on a world record breaking 400-medley relay team and played trombone. He spent two years at UC Berkeley where he marched in the band across the Golden Gate Bridge for its dedication before joining the US Army Air Core during WW II. Richard will always be remembered by many friends, caregivers and Christian Scientists for his kind and generous spirit, his whistle and humor, and his appreciation of others.
