JAMES CHESNUT
Former planning commissioner

James Chesnut, a former Larkspur planning commissioner, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 1990, at Kaiser Hospital in Terra Linda following a brief illness. He was 75.

Mr. Chesnut was a native of Sacramento. A member of an old Mill Valley family, he had lived in Mill Valley and Larkspur the last 70 years.

He served as a Navy lieutenant during World War II in the South Pacific.

Mr. Chesnut graduated from San Francisco State University and received a master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

He served on the Larkspur planning commission during the 1950s.

Mr. Chesnut was a music teacher at the junior high level in the San Francisco school district for over 40 years before he retired in 1976.

Mr. Chesnut was active in the Marin Symphony and the Sierra Club. An active Democrat, he was also active in the American Civil Liberties Union.

Mr. Chesnut is survived by his first wife, Marguerite Chesnut and his second wife, Elizabeth Chesnut, both of Mill Valley; three daughters, Barbara Chesnut of New York City, Nancy Chesnut Finlay of Nevada City, and Ellen Chesnut of Mill Valley; a son, Jaime Chesnut of San Anselmo; a brother, Thompson Chesnut of Mill Valley; and three grandsons.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 25. Friends may call the family for information.
