Woodacre Man Struck Down, Killed By Bus In San Anselmo Depot Yard
John Campilongo Victim Of Freak Fatal Accident
John Campilongo, 30, Woodacre. Was struck down and killed by a bus in the San Anselmo Greyhound lot this morning. Driver of the bus, Miss Lorraine Marie Bierman, 24, San Francisco, said she heard a bump as she backed her San Francisco-bound bus out of a parking space.
“I thought I had hit a chuck hole,” she told San Anselmo police.
She said she first realized the bus had hit the man when she looked forward and saw him sit up and then collapse. He died from a fractured skull before an ambulance arrived.
Marks on his clothing showed Campilongo had been hit and scraped by the bus but the wheels did not touch him.
Six witnesses, J. V. DeMello, Fairfax, Julius Nabers, Anthony Schuyler, Florence Ford, Don Hadley, Geln Tarwater and Thomas Jeppson, the latter six bus drivers being questioned today by Coroner J. Ray Keaton and San Anselmo police officers Gino Anselmo and Roy Magnaghi.
They said Campilongo was walking about 70 feet south of the pedestrian lane in the lot at 7:20 o’clock when the bus backed up and struck him.
A San Francisco elevator operator, Campilongo leaves an 11-year-old son. His wife died three years ago. The body is at the Guy W. Jenness and Co. mortuary, San Anselmo.
