Joseph Harvey Passes Away

Joseph Harvey, the well-known sporting man, and owner of the pool-room in the Buffalo Building, passed away on Friday afternoon, August 9, from a severe attack of typhoid pneumonia, which he contracted while looking over his hunting preserves, near Suisun. He was sick ten days, and it was expected that his strong constitution would pull him through. His death was a severe blow to his wife and to his friends.

The funeral took place Monday, from his residence on Franklin Street, San Francisco. Immense quantities of flowers and floral pieces were sent by his many friends. All the Board of Town Trustees attended the funeral. Dr. Thomas, of Howard Street Presbyterian Church, officiated. The honorary pall-bearers were: Ed. Smith, Captain Seymour, John Farley, John Giliardo, Chas. Asher, Mayor Thomas, Thomas Frost, Charles Heggerty, William Dohrmer, James Conway, Frank Daroux and Max Cohen. The remains were interred alongside his three brothers, in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The pool-rooms wee closed until Tuesday, and Mayor Thomas had the plaza flag flying at half-mast out of his respect for Mr. Harvey.

Harvey purchased a lot of provisions, chartered a steamer and donated the provisions to the local Relief Committee.

In addition to the pool-room interests, he was heavily interested in mining, real estate, and other business propositions. By his shrewdness he amassed an estate worth over five hundred thousand dollars.

A day before his death he left a will bequeathing one-half his estate to his wife, and the other half to his brothers, sisters and close relatives, naming the widow, Louise A. Harvey, Frank Daroux and Frank Maskey, as executors without bonds, to settle the estate. The Harvey home place is County Tyrone, Ireland, where he was born fifty-one years ago. He wishes the executors to have it fixed so that a Harvey could find a home there. Mrs. Harvey will dispose of her interest in the pool-rooms.

Frank Daroux, in speaking of his death, said he was the fourth prominent pool-room man to pass away in the last year. They have been close friends and business associates for many years.
