PARIS GIANNINI

The funeral for Paris Giannini, of Larkspur, longtime jazz drummer who played with most of the popular Bay Area hotel bands in the 1920s and 1930s, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of the Hills, San Anselmo.

Giannini died Sunday in his home after a brief illness. He was 80.

He was born in Italy and came to San Francisco as a child in 1902. He moved to Larkspur in 1938 and retired in 1964. He frequently played with bands in the Rose Bowl in Larkspur.

Eight years ago, he organized a popular band for the Marin chapter of Sons In Retirement, of which he was an active member.

He was also active in the Marin Lodge No. 191, Free and Accepted Masons, California Bodies of Scottish Rite, Islam Temple, and Marin Shrine Club. He was recently presented with the “Hiram” award by the Marin lodge for his Masonic activities. He belonged to the Marin Rod and Gun Club, Marin Sons In Retirement branch No. 7, and was a lifetime member of the Musicians Union Local 6.

The funeral will be under the auspices of Lodge No. 191. Burial will follow in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael.

He is survived by his wife, Yelva Giannini. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August. He is also survived by a son, Bruce Giannini of Houston; a daughter, Gloria Vasatka of San Mateo; three sisters, Bianca Parducci of Sonoma, Josephine Ceccanti of Corte Madera and Elda Landucci of Campbell, and five grandchildren.

The family prefers memorial contributions to any favorite charity.
