CARL HOPPE

Carl Hoppe of San Rafael, a Marin resident for 30 years and a well-known San Francisco patent attorney, died unexpectedly Friday at his home. He was 66.

Hoppe was born in Milwaukee. He attended Marquette University and earned his law degree at Marquette and the University of Wisconsin.

He joined the Wisconsin bar in 1937. He practiced in the Midwest until 1950 when he moved to Marin and began practicing in San Francisco.

He chaired bar association committees dealing with patent matters for several years. He also was a member of the San Francisco, Chicago and American bar associations.

He practiced in a number of different firms in San Francisco including several of his own. He continued to be an active member of the Illinois Bar Association by practicing in that state.

He also was licensed to practice before the federal Supreme Court and the U.S. Patent Trademark Office.

He lived in Belvedere and Tiburon before moving to San Rafael several years ago.

Hoppe was a member of the San Francisco and St. Francis yacht clubs.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Karl and Scotty Hoppe; and two daughters, Heather and Cheri Hoppe.

No services will be held at Hoppe’s request. The family prefers memorial donations to the American Cancer Society.
