Died PORTEOUS - At Hippolyte (sic) Ranch, San Rafael, February 6th, James S. Porteous, member of the Middle Temple, London, and formerly of Edinburgh.

Death of James S. Porteous
On last Sunday morning, at Hypolite Ranch, between Ross Valley and Lagunitas, Mr. James S. Porteous died. Mr. Porteous had but a few weeks previously moved into a new residence he had built, and being a man of means, and not actively engaged in business, he had anticipated a very happy outdoor life at his new home. Mr. Porteous was one of the most gentle and unassuming of men. He had the respect of everybody who knew him and the love as well of the few who were privileged to know him as a man and a scholar. He was a graduate of the University of Edinburgh and a member of the Middle Temple of London. He was one of the best scholars on the coast, and that in four languages. An evening with him was an evening with almost any author, or upon any subject he chose to introduce. Mr. Porteous was a Scotchman, 58 years old. He leaves a widow, but no children.
