H. JAMES MUMMA
Retired Tiburon teacher

H. James Mumma of Novato, a longtime teacher in the Reed School District, died Friday, May 4, 1990, while working in landscape maintenance. He was 61.

Mr. Mumma was born in Los Angeles and graduated from the University of Redlands in 1952. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955. His first teaching job was in Vacaville.

He went on to teach for 25 years in the Reed district in Tiburon. He retired in 1984.

Mr. Mumma served at Bel Aire and Reed schools, teaching third through sixth grades. He also served as school librarian.

After his retirement, he established his own yard maintenance business in Novato. He had resided in Marin for the past 31 years.

Mr. Mumma was an active member of the Marin chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jean Mumma of Novato; two sons, Sgt. 1st Class Peter Mumma of Fort Benning, Ga., and Jeffrey Mumma of Victorville in San Bernardino County; a daughter, Rebecca Mumma of San Francisco; his mother, Kathleen Mumma of Mill Valley; a brother, Dr. John Mumma of Bellingham, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

At his request, no service will be held. Arrangements were by the Russell & Gooch Mortuary in Mill Valley.

His family prefers that memorial contributions be made to the University of Redlands, Novato Human Needs Center or a favorite charity.
