Marin Journal
19 September 1878
John Sims, one of San Rafael’s most highly respected citizens, died at his residence on Friday, September 13th. He was a man of sterling qualities of head and heart and one whose loss is deeply felt by the entire community. His friends were legion. He had lived here for many years, and was always esteemed a citizen of large public spirit and enterprise.
He was a member of Marin Lodge No. 191, F. and a. M. and filled its highest office for three successive terms; he was also a member of Marin Lodge No. 200, I. O. O. F. and had filled the chair in that order. The flag is at half mast over the fire engine house and it is draped in mourning as a sign of grief for a deceased member. The funeral cortege Sunday was the longest and most imposing eve seen in San Rafael. Deceased leaves a widow and two children, besides a brother, a sister and a host of friends.
