ELEANOR G. MURRAY

Eleanor G. Murray, one of San Rafael’s oldest native citizens, died Wednesday at the age of 96 at the San Rafael home of her daughter.

Mrs. Murray was a longtime teacher and administrator at San Rafael High School and also a longtime member of the San Rafael Library Board.

She was born and raised in San Rafael and graduated with the class of 1906 from the University of California at Berkeley.

She taught at San Rafael High School for 35 years, retiring in 1957 as dean of girls. She served 37 years on the library board, retiring in 1971.

She also was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, and in 1966 she was named San Rafael Senior Citizen of the Year.

She is survived by her daughter, Marian Barbier, and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her son, William Murray, died last year.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Raphael’s Church in San Rafael. The rosary will be recited at the church at 9:15 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the Hanna Boys Center in Sonoma.
