A Pioneer Passes Away

Frederick M. Stocking, father of Charles F. Stocking, of this city, passed away quietly at his home in San Francisco on Friday afternoon.

Mr. Stocking arrived in California in the early fifties. And was a survivor of the wreck of the Pacific Mail steamship, Tennessee, after which Tennessee Cove was named.

The deceased was well known in literary circles on the coast, having been connected with the Overland Monthly, the Sunset Magazine, and various commercial publications. He was also a mining man and was interested in mines in Tuolomne, Placer and Shasta Counties.

Mr. Stocking was a pioneer of Santa Clara County, and belonged to the Santa Clara County Pioneers. He is survived by 5 children, 3 sons and 2 daughters.
