Mrs. Inez Briones Walsh

Bolinas lost a beloved link with its historic roots with the passing of Mrs. Inez Walsh, who died last Wednesday Feb. 4, at the age of 89.

The granddaughter of Don Gregorio Briones whose Spanish land grant holdings extended from Sausalito to Olema, she could with clarity recall the days of a friendlier era when townspeople picked huckleberries together and took part in camping excursions.

When her father, physician Pablo Briones, administered to the sick, Bolinas was known as “Dog Town” because of a landmark kennel then located in the community.

Mrs. Walsh was stricken with abdominal pains early Wednesday evening and passed away some four hours after being hospitalized.

She was the widow of James Walsh, long-time game warden with the Marin Municipal Water District who died in 1940.

Except for a six year stay in San Francisco from 1906-1912, Mrs. Walsh lived in Marin. She was a friend of Mrs. Marin Waterhouse Pepper, also daughter of an early Bolinas family who passed away in October.

Survivors include a son Edward J. Walsh of San Anselmo and a daughter Aileen Church of Berkeley, in addition to a sister Rose Briones of Bolinas and nine grandchildren: Russell Walsh, Bolinas, Gary Walsh, Petaluma and Corinda, Glen and Dale Walsh of San Anselmo; Linda and Coreen Miller of San Rafael, Bruce Guyette of Michigan and Roy Guyette of Point Reyes Station. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated at St. Raphael’s Church in San Rafael Saturday with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetry.
