Gate Keeper Dies After Month of Illness
Horace M. Janes died at San Quentin, November 17th, and the funeral service was held under the auspices of San Rafael Order of Eagles, last Monday, from the Sawyer Company parlors. Interment took place at Berkeley, where the body was shipped for incineration.
The deceased was the husband of Lida Janes, and son of Mrs. Lucy Thayer. He was a native of San Francisco, and had been at the prison for many years, where he was employed as outside gate keeper. His wife is at the present time one of the matrons at the prison.
Janes suffered a breakdown about a month ago, and was sent to the prison hospital. His condition grew worse from day to day until the end came. He was one of the charter members of the local Order of Eagles. President A. J. Silveria and Secretary John A. Buchanan officiated for the lodge at the funeral, assisted by a chaplain from the prison. He was also a member of the local parlor of Native Sons.
