MARY GORMLEY FLATT
Eastern Onion founder
Mary Gormley Flatt of San Rafael, founder of the Eastern Onion Singing Telegram Co., died Saturday, Aug. 18, 1990, at the home of her parents in San Rafael. She was 42.
Mrs. Flatt was reared in Marin and graduated in 1966 from Terra Linda High School.
She originated Eastern Onion on April 1, 1976, in Las Vegas and it went on to become the largest singing telegram company in the country with offices in most major metropolitan areas. It features singers in a variety of costumes who deliver messages in song.
She lived in Las Vegas and Santa Cruz before returning to Marin recently.
She is survived by two sons, Jamie Flatt and Joe Flatt, both of San Rafael; her parents, Ed and Emma Gormley of San Rafael; her former husband, Jim Flatt of Las Vegas; a sister, Victoria Allen of San Rafael; a brother, Ed Gormley of Corte Madera; her longtime companion, David Paulsen; and a granddaughter.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the home of her brother in Corte Madera.
The family prefers contributions be made to a trust fund for her sons and granddaughter in care of the Bank of America.
Arrangements were handled by the Neptune Society of San Rafael.
