COL. JOHN T. COX
Col. John T. Cox, 73, a retired Air Force officer, died Friday at a local rest home after an illness. Cox, of Novato, flew commercial planes in the early 1930s and was one of first pilots to fly a DC3.
He joined the Air Corps, later named the Air Force, before World War II.
Cox served with the Third Attack Group at Bardsdale, La., the Seventh Bombardment Group at Hamilton Air Force Base, as an instructor in the Bay Area reserve training program and as plans and operations office in the Mediterranean area for the Allied Air Force, covering North Africa and Southern Europe.
Cox retired from the Air Force in 1950. He was a native of Hillsboro, Tex., and a graduate of Columbia University. Cox had been a resident of Marin since 1940 and formerly had been married to Claire Cole of San Rafael.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen Cox and Leigh Williams, both of Marin. There will be no service. Burial will be at Arlington, Va. The family prefers that memorial contributions be to the American Cancer Society.
