EDWARD C. GATES, 61, Succumbs

Edward C. Gates, manager of the Tamalpais Theater in an Anselmo for 21 years, died yesterday at a local hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack on Thursday. He was 61.

Gates was born in Omaha, Neb., but moved with his family to Butte City, Glenn County, in 1912. He went to Berkeley in the late 1920s to attend the University of California and had lived in the Bay Area since.

After two years at the university, he transferred to Armstrong Business College, also in Berkeley, where he earned a degree in business administration.

He managed movie theaters for Fox West Coast Theaters in the Oakland area and before joining the San Anselmo theater in 1949.

He lived with his wife, Teresa, at 10 Amberwood Lane, San Anselmo.

Gates was an Army Veteran of World War II and belonged to the San Anselmo Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. He was president of the chamber in 1957-58.

Also surviving is a sister, Dorothy Foster of Pleasanton.

Funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Chapel of the Hills, San Anselmo, followed by private entombment.
