JOSEPH RYAN

Joseph J. Ryan, wonder and operator of the Valley Mercantile in Tamalpais Valley until the grocery’s closing about two years ago, died yesterday at his home following a long illness.

Ryan, 64, had lived in Tamalpais Valley 29 years, last residing at 507 Northern Avenue, Apt. 1. He operated the store for 19 years.

His store was in the path of the Coyote Creek Flood Control Project and for this reason Ryan closed it. He was a veteran of World War I and had lived 34 years in California.

He is survived by his wife, Eula V. Ryan, and a son, John L. Ryan of Stateline, El Dorado County.

Ryan was a native of New York.

Requiem mass will be celebrated for Ryan at 9:30 tomorrow at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Mill Valley. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today at Russell and Gooch Mortuary. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, San Rafael.
