Hans Fischel, Part-Time Hub Treasurer, Dies In Auto Crash

Hans E. Fischel, 65, a public accountant who served as San Anselmo’s parttime city treasurer, was fatally injured Saturday night when his car flipped off Highway 37, east of Lakeville Road, Sonoma County.

Fischel, who suffered internal abdominal and chest injuries, died at Novato General Hospital at 9:15 p.m., 90 minutes after the solo crash.

His wife, Greta, 63, who suffered severe head and body cuts and internal injuries, was reported in satisfactory condition today at Novato General Hospital.

Fischel’s car was traveling west when it swerved onto the shoulder of the roadway, struck a guard rail, flipped over and landed 25 feet below the roadway, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Ken Allan Fowler, 22, of 45 Creek Road, Fairfax, according to patrol officers, said Fischel, traveling in the slow lane, started to change into the fast land in front of him.

There was less than a car length between them so he honked his horn to warn Fischel, Fowler said.

Then, Fowler reported, according to the patrol, that Fischel jerked his car back to the slow lane, and it apparently went out of control, going from one land to the other until it hit the guard rail.

Fischel was elected San Anselmo city treasurer in April 1968, unseating George W. Prydz. Mrs. Fischel was nominated last month for Marin Senior Citizen of the Year by the Senior Adult Group of San Anselmo.

Fischel, who lived at 107 Brookside Drive, had been a resident of San Anselmo since 1953. He was a native of Germany.

Before opening his own office in San Anselmo, he was employed by Standard Oil Co. of California for 28 years. He was a member of the National Society of Public Accountants, Marian County Historical Society, and in Council for Civic Affairs and San Anselmo Homes Association.
