KOKJER - Peacefully in her home at Villa Marin in San Rafael on Sunday, Jan. 15, 1995, at about 9:50 a.m. after a long battle with cancer and Parkinson Disease. Ruth Wilson Kokjer was born in Philadelphia on the 28th of September, 1915. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy, in Philadelphia, her husband, Ralph at Villa Marin, and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. In her youth Ruth was an accomplished flutist, winning a young musicians contest to play with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Stokowski. She probably was the first woman in the country to be appointed as conductor of a college or university symphony orchestra. During WWII she attained the rank of Captain and headed the program for rehabilitation of the blind at Dibble General Hospital in Menlo Park. After receiving her Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her Doctorate from Stanford University she spent approximately sixteen years as the chief psychologist in the San Mateo schools. After retiring, she served on the San Mateo County Grand Jury and in 1970 organized an association of past grand jurors, becoming the first president and executive director for 15 additional years. Ruth moved to Villa Marin in th e fall of 1985 and quickly became involved as a member of the board of directors and subsequently with various committees.
A memorial gathering will be held in the auditorium at Villa Marin, 100 Thorndale Dr., San Rafael, on January 21, 1995, at 3:30 p.m. The family prefers contributions be made to Hospice of Marin, 150 Nellen Ave., Corte Madera, CA 94925-1133.
