SISTER MARY PHILIP LYONS
Sister Mary Philip Lyons, a longtime teacher and administrator at Dominican College, died Wednesday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Reno, Nev. after a brief illness. She was 69.
Sister Mary was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and spent her childhood in Vallejo. She received her bachelor’s degree from Dominican College and master’s degree in history from Catholic University of American in Washington, D.C.
Before joining the Sisters of St. Dominic, Congregation of Holy Name, she had taught grades 5 through 8 in a two-room school in Napa County.
As a Dominican, Sister Mary taught at St. Vincent’s elementary and secondary schools in Vallejo, the St. Rose Academy in San Francisco and the Dominican Convent Upper School in San Rafael.
She was principal of the St. Rose Academy from 1950 to 1953. She also served as prioress at St. Rose Convent and at the Dominican Convent from 1953 to 1959.
Since 1965, she had been associated with Dominican College as assistant professor of history, director of admissions and assistant dean.
More recently, she was on staff of the registrar’s office.
She is survived by a brother, James J. Lyons of Ventura.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Dominican Convent Chapel in San Rafael.
Recitation of the rosary will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the convent chapel. Burial will be at St. Dominic’s Cemetery in Benicia on Saturday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Infirmary at the Dominican Convent.
