Mary Ann Piezzi, ‘War Mother’, 74, Passes in Petaluma

The funeral of Mrs. Mary Ann Piezzi, 74, old Petaluma woman and past president of the American War Mothers, took place there last Saturday. She passed away March 13, at her home due to a rapid decline in health since the death of her son some years ago.

Mrs. Piezzi was born in San Francisco. But her early life was spent on a ranch near Tomales, where her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Eugene John Morton, settled in the early days. She attended school at Tomales, and when quite young became the bride of Henry Piezzi, who survives. Their golden wedding anniversary would have been June 22, and Mrs. Piezzi often remarked during her illness that she hoped to be well to enjoy a big party that was being planned for the couple.

She was married at the Church of the Assumption at Tomales.

The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Piezzi are Eugene, Rose E. Piezzi, Henry M. Piezzi, Mrs. Eugene B. Morosoli, and the late Nolda Piezzi. She was the grandmother of Diane and Gene Morosoli, and Charles Piezzi; aunt of Harold and Jack Duckworth; cousin of Mrs. Lawrence Ormerd. The deceased’s only sister, Mrs. Helen Duckworth, died about 18 years ago.

During the funeral service the flag at the American Legion Hall in Petaluma was lowered at half-mast in memory of Mrs. Piezzi, who was one of the organizers of the War Mothers. This unit was organized in honor of the late Ruth and Viola Lundholmn, war nurses who died overseas in World War I. Members of all military organizations who knew Mrs. Piezzi always called her “Mother”, due to the interest she took in all matters connected with the war.
