Runaway Auto Deals Death to Mrs. Harry Torr, Army Matron
Mrs. Harry Torr, 19, of 1409 Second Street, San Rafael, wife of Sergt. Harry Torr, U.S. Army, was fatally crushed by a runaway auto at Second and D Streets last Thursday afternoon.
Mrs. Torr was wheeling her five-months-old daughter on the sidewalk when an automobile with defective brakes that was parked on the D Street side of Barr’s Service Station, rolled down the slope at that point and crushed the woman against a hydrant. She died in a local hospital shortly afterward.
The child was thrown a short distance away, but though unconscious when picked up, she soon recovered.
Owner of the car, Leo H. Limpack, 1808 Linden Ave., who had called at the post office, returned immediately after the tragedy and explained that he had left the car in reverse gear, but it had evidently slipped out of gear and started on the fatal plunge.
Mrs. Torr was formerly Marie Agnes Jones of Petaluma, and daughter of Melvin B. Jones, Petaluma hatcheryman; sister of Wm. M. Jones of the U.S. Army; Francis J. Jones of Petaluma; Mrs. Raymond Griffith of Petaluma, and Miss Ave Jones, San Francisco.
Sergt. Harry Torr, the bereaved husband, was in the Pacific Northwest with a detachment of soldiers at the time of the tragedy, and arrived by plane Friday night.
The funeral was conducted at St. Vincent’s Church, Petaluma, Saturday morning, at which Rev. Father Patrick Morriss officiated.
