EARL F. DUNPHY
Former Sausalito mayor

Earl F. Dunphy, a former mayor and councilman of Sausalito, died Thursday at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae. Dunphy, who was 89, lived in Sausalito for 77 years.

Dunphy was born in San Francisco and lived in numerous places in the state as his father sought work as a railroad boilermaker. He was 12 when his family settled in Sausalito in 1917.

Dunphy graduated from Tamalpais High School, where he learned his trade as a machinist. He worked as a machinist for several boat-builders – including Martinolich, Madden & Lewis, and Knees – and later for the San Francisco Newspaper Agency.

Dunphy’s first stint on the City Council was from 1936 to 1944. He followed that up with a second run from 1964 to 1974, which included a one-year term as mayor in 1970.

The list of other city offices he held is a long one, including planning commissioner, postmaster, fire commissioner and board member of the Sausalito Sanitary District.

“He was in the council when I got on in 1968,” said Councilwoman Robin Sweeny. “He was a pleasure to work with. He was very direct almost to the point of being blunt. But that was OK because he was always a gentleman. He was very respectful of the process and his integrity was just impeccable. He was special.”

During his later years, Dunphy could look down from his house on the hillside behind Sausalito’s City Hall and see the waterfront park named in his honor.

Dunphy is survived by his daughter, Patricia H. McCallister of Mill Valley. He also has eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be held at Star of the Sea Church in Sausalito on Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Feb. 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Star of the Sea. Entombment will follow at 2 p.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery in San Rafael. The public is invited to attend all services.

Memorial donations may be made to Star of the Sea Church.
