Rosalie Moore
by Mark Martin, Chronicle Staff Writer
A memorial service will be held Aug. 19 in Tiburon for Rosalie Moore, an award-winning Bay Area poet who was a member of a nationally known circle of poets called the Activists.
Mrs. Moore died of natural causes on June 18 in Petaluma. She was 90.
She was a native of Oakland and a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where she also received a master's degree.
Mrs. Moore was a fixture in the Bay Area literary community and published poems from 1949 until 1995.
Her love for poetry was born in the 1930s, when she began taking classes taught by Lawrence Hart, who became a well-known leader of the Activists movement. Hart preached that poems should be exciting, with every line active, and Mrs. Moore was one of his star pupils.
Her first collection of poems, "The Grasshopper's Man and Other Poems," was published in 1949. Other books include 1977's "Year of the Children," a narrative poem about the Children's Crusade; "Of Singles and Doubles," in 1979;
and 1995's "Gutenberg in Strasbourg," a series of poems about the invention of the printing press. She also was published in countless magazines and poetry anthologies.
Mrs. Moore won two Guggenheim Awards, which provided grants to support her work.
She also wrote childrens' books in collaboration with her husband, Bill Brown. They were married in 1942 after meeting at a class taught by Hart.
In addition to writing, Mrs. Moore taught in the Communications Department of the College of Marin from 1965 to 1975. She also taught at Mills College and lectured at Mexico City College.
She was preceded in death by her husband. Mrs. Moore is survived by three daughters, Debbie Turrietta of Novato, Celia Hopfensperger of Lagunitas and Camas Timmel of Petaluma . She is also survived by three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Community Congregational Church, 145 Rock Hill Drive, Tiburon. Donations can be made to the Marin Poetry Center, PO Box 9091, San Rafael CA 94901.
