FRANCESCA ORTEGA BRADY

A Mass of Christian Burial was held today in San Francisco for Francesca Ortega Brady, 86-year-old descendent of an early Spanish family.

Mrs. Brady was a direct descendent of Jose Ortega, the chief of scouts for the Portola expedition, and also was related to the Ruiz y Lugo, Moreno, de la Guerra, Carillo and Estudillo families, all of whom held Spanish land grants.

She was born in Santa Barbara but moved with her family to San Francisco as a child and was educated at the Dominican Convent in San Rafael.

In her youthful years, she served as La Favorita in San Francisco’s annual birthday celebration. She was one of the founders of the Junior League in San Francisco and when she sang on a radio station to earn money for a League project, the program became such a success it grew into a nationwide broadcast.

Mrs. Brady’s husband, Dr. George Brady, who died in 1954, was a physician who was the son of Gold Rush pioneers.

Mrs. Brady was honored by King Juan Carlos of Spain in 1975 with the Order of Isabella the Catholic for her efforts in keeping Spanish culture alive in California.

Surviving are her son, George Jr., and two granddaughters.

The family prefers memorial contributions to St. Dominic’s Church in San Francisco or St. Albert’s Church in Oakland.
