DONALD B. KIRBY
Donald Beach Kirby, prize-winning architect who designed two schools in San Rafael, died Sunday in San Francisco after a long illness. He was 74.
Among Kirby’s Marin buildings wee the McPhail Building, Davidson Middle School and Santa Venetia School.
He also designed several prominent San Francisco buildings, including the library in the Presidio, the annex to the park headquarters in Golden Gate Park and a building at the Katherine Delmar Burke School which won him honors from the American Institute of Architects and the Association of School Administrators.
Kirby was a former president of the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects and winner of the California council’s highest honor, the Certificate of Distinguished Service.
He was born in Denver and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
After World War II he established his office in San Francisco and remained in his practice until last spring when he became ill.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; two children, Bonnie Augenblick of New Jersey and Daniel Kirby of New York, and six grandchildren.
At his request there will be no services. His family prefers memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
