Eve Ann Rannells
by Chuck Squatriglia, Chronicle Staff Writer

Eve Ann Rannells, a retired San Francisco librarian, died Wednesday at St. Helena Hospital following a brief illness. She was 65.

The Calistoga resident was the wife of former Chronicle reporter Jackson Rannells, and she spent much of her life in newspaper households. Her father, Robert Eunson, was an Associated Press foreign correspondent and San Francisco bureau chief from 1956 until 1963 and then vice president of broadcasting.

Mrs. Rannells was born in Phoenix, Ariz. Her father's journalistic travels took his family around the world, and Mrs. Rannells grew up in Belgium, France, Japan and New York.

She met Jack Rannells in 1956 at Stanford University, where they studied journalism and worked for the campus newspaper. They graduated in June 1958 and married one month later.

Mrs. Rannells spent much of the 1960s working as a publicist for the Stanford Summer Festival of the Arts. She later became a technician for the San Francisco Public Library and the city's law library. Mrs. Rannells also worked for five years as a librarian for the state public defenders office in San Francisco, where she compiled an exhaustive database of expert witnesses.

Mrs. Rannells, who adored reading, "lived her work," her husband said. Nowhere was that more evident than in Papua New Guinea, where she loved working as a librarian at the National Library and the national university's law school.

The couple moved to Papua New Guinea in 1984 after Mrs. Rannells read about the country and decided to become a librarian there. They returned to Santa Rosa in 1998 and moved to Calistoga in February.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Rannells is survived by her son, Buck Rannells of Toronto; her daughter, Nina Rannells of San Rafael; two sisters, Dale Eunson of Santa Monica and Lisa Eunson of Millbrae; and three grandchildren, Lee and Jesse Rannells of Toronto and Anton Zahradnik of San Rafael.

A private memorial service is planned. Memorials may be made to any charity.
