ERNEST OHRT

Funeral was today in Daly City for Ernest J. Ohrt of San Rafael, a former Olympic cycling coach and internationally known cyclist. Ohrt died Saturday in a local hospital of pneumonia at age 79.

A native of San Francisco, Ohrt lived for the past 10 years at 326 Mission Avenue. He had lived in Australia and Europe at time throughout his life.

Ohrt was an early promoter of the now common 10-speed bicycle, and introduced the caliper-style handbrake to the U.S.

During his racing years, he toured the world with his late brother, Hans, competing in major championships. He won the Grand Prix of Rome, considered by some to be the ultimate test for cyclists.

He coached the U.S. Olympic cycling squad that went to the 1924 Games in Paris.

In 1937, he opened a bicycle shop on Stanyon Street in San Francisco which he operated until his retirement. He was a member of many San Francisco bike organizations.

He is survived by four daughters, including Jacqueline Delaney of San Rafael, and Lorreine O’Hanlon of Novato; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Contributions to the Parkinson Institute of Miami, Fla. preferred.
