MARGARET S. SARRIS
Mosaic artist

Margaret S. Sarris of Novato died Monday, June 18, 1990, at San Rafael Convalescent Hospital after a long illness. She was 71.

Mrs. Sarris was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She attended the Traphagen Art School in New York City.

She was an artist, teacher and businesswoman. She was employed as an art class teacher at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in North Hollywood and at West Portal Lutheran School in San Francisco.

She also taught mosaic and oil painting at her studio in San Francisco in the 1960s.

Her best known work of art is a pebble mosaic of Jesus’ crucifixion, done as an 8’ by 22’ altar piece at Grace Lutheran Church in San Francisco, completed in 1961.

In 1965 she completed “O Holy Night” for Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pacifica.

Her last work was the “Good Shepherd,” an altar piece at All Saints Lutheran Church in Novato in 1983.

All her pebble mosaics were comprised of naturally colored pebbles collected from Northern California beaches.

She moved to Marin in 1974.

In 1970 she founded Carpets by Margaret Inc., a designer floor covering supply business in San Francisco. She directed the business until her retirement in 1982.

Mrs. Sarris was active in the All Saints Lutheran Church for many years and sang in the choir there.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Steven T. Sarris of Novato; two daughters, Bernice Hill of Novato and Margaret Baker; two sons, William Martin Baker of San Pedro, and Peter Baker of San Francisco; one step-son, Theodore Sarris of Novato; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at All Saints Lutheran Church, 2 San Marin Drive, Novato.

Burial will be at Valley Memorial Park in Novato.

Memorial contributions are preferred to All Saints Lutheran Church or the Marin Adult Day Health Services, 1905 Novato Blvd., Novato 94947.
