JOHN R. GADDY
A Mass of Christian burial for John R. (Jack) Gaddy, one-time University of San Francisco all-round athletic star, will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Ignatius Church, San Francisco.
Gaddy, a Sleepy Hollow resident, died Sunday in a local hospital after a long illness. He was 69.
He was a third-generation California, grandson of Robert Gaddy, one of the pioneer settlers in Lake County.
Gaddy, as a 6-foot-4 youth, towered over the other athletes of his day and lettered in three sports at the University of San Francisco – football, basketball and baseball. He was the first USF gridder to play an East-West Shrine Game and was an All-Coast end and honorable mention in the All-America football roster, an All-America baseball star and All-Coast basketball honoree in 1930 and 1931. He was listed in the university’s Hall of Fame.
He served as coach and athletic director for city College of San Francisco for 37 years, retiring in 1972. His coaching career was interrupted for World War II service in the Navy reserve; he retired as a commander. He also officiated at National Football League games for six years.
Gaddy was a member of the Marin chapter of the Retired Officers Association and of the Homeowners Association of Sleepy Hollow.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Hale Gaddy; two sons, John Lawrence Gaddy and Willliam Hale Gaddy; a daughter, Leslie Christensen; two grandchildren; two brothers, Robert and Hugh (Dick) Gaddy; and a sister, Margaret Anido.
The rosary will be recited at 7:30 tonight in St. Ignatius Church. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland.
The family prefers memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
