EDWARD KONEY
Edward J. Koney, a pioneer Morse code operator who worked for more than 50 years as a telegrapher, died Friday in San Rafael after a brief illness. He was 95.
Koney, a native of Wisconsin, joined a telegraph service as a boy and worked for several firms before joining Western Union, where he worked for many years before retiring.
He moved to San Rafael nine years ago, and lived at the Aldersly Danish Home.
He was a member of the United Telegraph Workers Local No. 34, and of the Presidio and Parnassus Masonic Lodge No. 388.
He was the husband of the late Olga Koney.
He is survived by a daughter, Louise Burke of Virginia; a brother, Sidney Block of Chicago; a sister, Bess Rose of Los Angeles; and two grandchildren.
Masonic memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Aldersly Danish Home chapel in San Rafael.
Inurnment will be in Cypress Lawn Cemetery, Colma.
The family prefers memorial contributions to Aldersly Danish Home.
