Prominent S.R. Woman Dies at Age of 78
Mrs. HELEN LOUISE OLMSTED, who was the wife of the late Cassius Clay OLMSTED, died Saturday night at her home after a six-months illness. A native of Burlington, IA, Mrs. OLMSTED was 78 years of age at the time of her death. She is survived by a sister, Clara A. THWING of Oakland, and a brother, O.A. DAVIS of Los Angeles.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at afternoon rites in the Guy W. Jenness & Co. Chapel, San Anselmo, with services conducted by Rev. J.J. Canoles.
The late Mr. and Mrs. OLMSTED played a prominent part in civic affairs during their years of residence in San Rafael. Coming to their adopted town from San Diego in 1898, the OLMSTED family purchased The Marin Journal and remained as publishers until 1920, when the late E.L. KYNOCH bought the newspaper and printing plant.
Shortly after the sale, Mr. OLMSTED was appointed postmaster, serving until the late Thomas DAY succeeded him in the early 1930s.
Both Mr. and Mrs. OLMSTED spent their later years developing a beautiful rose garden in the grounds of their home on Hillcrest Drive.
