Car Leaps Bank and Hurtles Into Big Rock Gulch
JOSEPH E. WEST, 36, and his wife, Mrs. ELSIE GERALDINE WEST of 180 Tunstead Avenue, San Anselmo, were killed early yesterday when their car left the road and careened over a banking and into a gulch near Big Rock in Lucas Valley. Highway patrolmen estimated the accident occurred shortly before 2 a.m.
WEST, a driver for the Greyhound lines, was thrown clear of the car, and Mrs. WEST was pinned under the wreckage. Both apparently had been killed instantly.
The couple were well known in San Anselmo and other Marin communities. They had lived on Tunstead Avenue for about a year. Mrs. WEST was a hairdresser associated with Helen's Beauty Shop in the Cheda building in San Anselmo, and had been previously employed in the same capacity in other shops in the county.
Authorities were not able immediately to contact relatives of the couple. WEST had come here from the "East", according to neighbors, but they were unable to recall what State. Mrs. WEST was reported to have relatives somewhere in Southern California.
