Funeral Today for a Tough Cop in Barbary Coast's Prime
Funeral services will be held in San Francisco today for MANSFIELD JOY, who died at Notre Dame Hospital on Monday, following a brief illness. Born in Virginia City, NV, 84 years ago, "MANNIE" JOY served on the police force in San Francisco from 1893 until he retired in 1934. Joy and his wife then moved to Larkspur to make their home.
In December 1946, Mrs. JOY died, and JOY continued to live in Marin with his daughter, Kathleen JOY, who had left her position in the city to care for her parents. Others who survive the veteran police officer are a son, Major Mansfield JOY, now stationed in Tokyo, Terwyn and Jack JOY, and daughters, Mrs. Aileen GATES and Mrs. Clair CORLISS.
JOY had a very colorful career as a peace officer. His first beat was Pacific Street, in the old Barbary Coast days. At that time there were 80 saloon and dance halls on the beat. The last 10 years of service prior to retirement, JOY was bailiff in various police and municipal courts of the city.
The story is told that when young Griffo, an Australian boxer, invaded JOY's territory, and threatened to "clean up on everyone", JOY changed the tough's mind and escorted him to a train which was bound for Chicago and points east.
