CLAIRE H. SALOP
Memorial services for Claire Harriet Salop, 53, of Sausalito, a former student advisor at San Francisco State University, will be 5 p.m. Feb. 17.
Details on where the services will be held may be obtained by calling the executor, George Changaris at 483-7240.
Miss Salop was found dead at her home Wednesday night following a short illness.
A native of New York City, Miss Salop had been a consultant up to the time of her death for the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare on drug abuse and women’s programs.
Before that she had been a re-entry counselor for several years with the Bridge Foundation in Berkeley, helping former drug addicts enter mainstream life.
She had been a student advisor in the dean of students’ office at San Francisco State from 1959 to 1970. She had formulated the college’s free speech policy and started a tutorial program in which college students tutored children in the city.
Miss Salop had filed a $1.1 million sex discrimination suit in U.S. District Court against the College of Marin in 1975 over an assistant dean’s position she didn’t get. The case never came to court.
After earning a master’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin, she came to the Bay Area in 1959, moving to Sausalito in 1963.
She also was active in the Ross Valley Players.
She is survived by her parents, Ray and Harry Salop of Miami, Fla.; and a brother, Alan Scott of New York City.
The Neptune Society will handle arrangements for cremation. The ashes will be scattered at sea.
