Third Convict Dies; Nine Ill with 'Copying' Poison
Three San Quentin convicts were dead and nine were ill today from drinking a poisonous fluid used to operate a duplicating machine, Warden Clinton Duffy reported.
ARTIS CLARK, 34, convicted in San Diego County for illegal possession of narcotics in May 1945, died last night in the prison hospital.
Duffy said some of the other nine men in the hospital were in pretty bad shape. Two were believed to be critically ill.
The fluid was taken from a gallon can labeled 'poison', and an attempt had been made to filter it through bread.
