FRANCO A. BERTOLA
Franco A. Bertola of San Rafael, a Marin resident for several years, died Jan. 9 by drowning while swimming off St. Thomas Island in the Virgin Islands. He was 43. Bertola was a native of Italy and moved to Colombia as a child with his parents following World War II.
He was a graduate of the nautical academy Leon Pancaldo where he earned the degree of ship’s captain in the Merchant Marine. He sent on to study architecture and received a master’s degree in environmental design from the University of California at Berkeley.
He worked for Lester Gorsline Associates, an architectural firm in Marin, for several years until it was disbanded. He moved to Marin several years ago.
He specialized in designing health care facilities of all kinds.
He was an associate member of the American Institute of Architects.
He is survived by his mother, Maria Benedek and a sister, Patricia Bertola, both of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
There will be no services. Burial will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael.
