WILLIAM F. NIGHTINGALE
Hospital administrator

William F. Nightingale of Larkspur, a health care consultant at numerous local hospitals, died Saturday, June 15, 1991, at Marin General Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 64.

Mr. Nightingale was a native of San Francisco. He was a Larkspur resident since 1956.


Mr. Nightingale was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Nightingale was employed by numerous hospitals, including Queen of the Valley hospital in Napa, where he spent 12 years as the hospital’s controller. In 1976, he joined the staff at Novato General Hospital, now Novato Community hospital, as its administrator and controller. Additionally, he spent four years as chief financial officer for Richmond Community Hospital before it closed.

Prior to his employment with Novato Community, he operated his own consulting firm. As vice president and manager of the Marin office of Barto Hospital Services Inc., headquartered in San Jose, Mr. Nightingale provided consultation and financial management services to hospitals, rest homes and medical practices.

He was a past president of the Hospital Financial Association of Northern California, which represents about 200 hospitals in California and on the Oregon border.

He was a member of Silverado County Club for 25 years.

Mr. Nightingale is survived by his wife of 36 years, Josephine Nightingale of Larkspur; a daughter, Coleen Dziachan of Hahn Air Force Base in Germany; a son, David Nightingale of San Carlos; one brother, Raymond Nightingale of San Francisco; one sister, Mary Crangle of Belmont; and two grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Mill Valley.

Burial is private.

Memorial contributions are preferred to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 151685, San Rafael 94915.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds information: he was the father-in-law of Col. David Dziachan and Melissa Nightingale, and grandfather of Jonathan Nightingale and Christian Dziachan.
